Michael Carrick's telling response over Man Utd permanent job after Arsenal win

Michael Carrick has conceded that he will be continually asked about permanent tenure at Manchester United for the remainder of the season, despite not wanting to answer the same question each week. The 44-year-old inspired a 3-2 win over Arsenal in north London on Sunday evening to remain unbeaten as the Red Devils' interim head coach.
It comes off the back of a 2-0 win over bitter rivals Manchester City in his maiden game at the reins last weekend, with fans and pundits worldwide noticing a fresh-start fever under Carrick at present. While his short-term contract is viewed as exactly that, and that United will assess their options in the summer, it hasn't stopped the speculation that the club could already have the man who holds the keys to their success going forward.
Asked about whether he hopes to take charge of United next season in the wake of Sunday's win at the Emirates Stadium, Carrick replied: "I'm enjoying it. It's a fantastic position to be in.
"What happens next I'm not going to be answering it every week. I'm enjoying it and I'll continue to do what I can."
However, not everyone is convinced by Carrick's heroics in his short but incredibly sweet tenure thus far. Speaking on Sky Sports ' Super Sunday coverage after Sunday's win, Micah Richards asked Roy Keane if he would take Carrick as permanent Manchester United manager.
However, the stone-faced former club captain replied : "The job? No, you're being silly now. Yeah, two great performances...anyone can win two games, it's what he does at the end of the season.
"Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn't be convinced that he's the man for the job. Absolutely not. I still think they need a bigger and better manager. But he's got the opportunity - what a chance it is for him, and do you know what, he's taking it so fair play to him."

It comes as Carrick remains the bookies' favourite to take up a permanent position with United come season's end, while a wealth of other names have also been linked with the position. Oliver Glasner is another head coach who has seen his name tossed into the hat for a shake-up this summer.
The Crystal Palace boss explained that he will part ways with Selhurst Park at the end of the season, when his current contract expires. However, Manchester United may wish to steer clear of the Austrian as a result of his defiant rant toward Palace executives last weekend.
Elsewhere, Gareth Southgate has been linked with a sensational return to the managerial game for the first time since parting ways with the England national team after guiding the Three Lions to a runners-up spot at Euro 2024.
Thomas Tuchel , Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino have also come up in conversation - but with the trilogy of head coaches currently committing their undivided attention to the 2026 World Cup, it appears unlikely that they will ditch international duties any time soon.
Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
