Michael Carrick named Manchester United interim head coach

Michael Carrick has been appointed Manchester United’s interim head coach until the end of the season. The club said in a statement that the former captain takes charge following Rúben Amorim’s dismissal on 5 January.

Since Amorim’s exit, Darren Fletcher had overseen the side on a temporary basis while the hierarchy weighed their options. United have now turned to a figure steeped in the club, trusting a man who knows the dressing room and the standards demanded.

Carrick, who played for United from 2006 to 2018, returns to the forefront of elite football. This represents the biggest challenge of his coaching career, with the immediate aim of steadying the team in the run-in.

His first match will be the Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola’s City , second in the Premier League. The game is at Old Trafford on Saturday and will be a stern early examination of his ability to handle pressure and the dressing room.

Carrick inherits a side in difficulty, seventh in the league and 17 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, and already out of both domestic cups. A 1-2 home loss to Brighton in the FA Cup was especially damaging. It leaves United facing their shortest campaign since 1914-15, with only 40 competitive fixtures in total.
