Arsenal have undoubtedly wobbled in the Premier League title race but are still the clear favourites according to Michael Owen . The Gunners suffered their first home defeat of the campaign as Manchester United claimed a stunning 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal took the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal but a terrible error by Martin Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to make it 1-1 before half-time. Patrick Dorgu then smashed United ahead with a long-range screamer and the home side equalised through Mikel Merino’s scrappy effort from a corner but Matheus Cunha’s curler settled it for Michael Carrick’s side.

Defeat for Arsenal followed wins for Manchester City and Aston Villa to cut their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points. Mikel Arteta ’s side are now three league games without a win, having drawn 0-0 with Liverpool and Nottingham Forest previously.

Arsenal have won all seven of their Champions League games, hold a 3-2 aggregate lead ahead of the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea and are still in the FA Cup . And Owen thinks it is too soon to write them off, despite the recent shaky performances in the league as they aim for a first title since 2003/04.

“It’s given everyone a little bit of a chance,” Owen said on Premier League Productions. “I don’t think Manchester City have been brilliant this season but wow, they’ve been playing pretty average and they’re only four points away from it. It’s a massive result for Aston Villa today and that claws them into contention as well.

“I still think it’s Arsenal’s to give away. I think they’re the best team in the league, they’re the most consistent and the most solid and probably the best squad. But there are questions. They’ve not done it before or for a long, long time so we’ll see how it pans out. But two points from nine is a wobble.”

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira was critical of his former side’s resilience and claimed too many key players didn’t show up after the defeat by United. Asked to respond to his comments, Arteta replied: “At the end, we have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch when it comes to a match day.

“We were absolutely brilliant in Milan, and today we weren’t that good. I don't know if it was mental, because of how much they played, but because we were poor, especially technically in certain aspects of the game, against a team that when you make those mistakes, they can punish you big time. That was the difference.”

Arsenal face Kairat in the final game of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday before travelling to Leeds on the weekend. They will then hope to book their place in the first final of the season by beating Chelsea in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
