Thomas Tuchel is believed to be amongst the frontrunners for the Manchester United head coach's position as the club searches for a new permanent boss from this summer – and Wayne Rooney has previously made his admiration for the current England manager clear.

United have appointed Michael Carrick as head coach on an interim basis to steer the side through to the end of the campaign after Ruben Amorim's abrupt exit. It appears there are no plans for Carrick to continue in the position beyond the current season at present, although he got off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The club are instead pursuing a vastly experienced manager capable of rejuvenating the Premier League heavyweights. Oliver Glasner has been mentioned in connection with the vacancy, a link strengthened by the Crystal Palace manager confirming this term would be his final one at Selhurst Park.

Yet according to The i Paper , United's decision-makers are not pursuing the Palace chief and have instead turned their attention towards two ex-Premier League managers - Tuchel and Robert De Zerbi. Old Trafford icon Rooney has already voiced his preference for appointing the England boss.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, he said: "Xabi Alonso did incredible at (Bayer) Leverkusen and I think you have more chance of him sitting and waiting and hoping with ( Liverpool manager Arne) Slot.

"Tuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League, has won trophies. He is doing well at England. Time will tell."

Before taking the reins of the England team last year, Tuchel had been at the helm of three of Europe's footballing giants - Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich . The 52 year old clinched major trophies with each club.

During his tenure at Chelsea, Tuchel famously led the team to Champions League glory in a final against Manchester City , as well as securing the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. He then swapped Stamford Bridge for Bayern Munich, where he lifted the Bundesliga title.

Prior to his stints at Chelsea and Bayern, Tuchel made waves in France with PSG . He bagged two league titles, the French Cup, the French League Cup and secured a runner-up spot in the Champions League.

While these accomplishments have certainly caught Rooney's eye, Tuchel's biggest test could be on the horizon this summer as he gears up to guide England at the 2026 World Cup.

The German has had a promising start with the Three Lions, and his future may hinge on how England fare at the tournament, with the team considered among the favourites.

Tuchel isn't the only one being linked with the soon-to-be vacant United job. Luis Enrique's name has also been floated, although the current PSG boss is expected to stay put in France.

Former Brighton manager De Zerbi is reportedly another prime candidate. Now managing Marseille, the Italian has had a successful run, boasting a 58 per cent win rate from 62 matches, compared to Amorim's 40 per cent at United.

For the time being, Carrick is at the helm. Ahead of Saturday's Manchester derby, the ex-midfielder set out his goals for the season, stating: "Not in terms of it has to be this or that way. Like I said, we want to be near the top. But we have to take some small steps toward that and European football would a step toward that."
