Manchester United would be 'crazy' to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as boss until the end of the season, and should instead look to Roy Keane or Michael Carrick, according to Danny Murphy. The Red Devils are in search of a new boss after they dismissed Ruben Amorim earlier in the week .

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in a caretaker role at Old Trafford, with Solskjaer the frontrunner to take over until the end of the season. The club have been in talks with the Norwegian, in addition to Carrick , who is also available after being sacked by Middlesbrough earlier in the season.

Solskjaer was previously in charge of United from 2018 until 2021. The Baby-faced Assassin replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis before impressing enough to land the role full-time.

The ex-Besiktas boss was unable to bring success to the Theatre of Dreams, however. At the time of his exit, United were seventh in the Premier League table and had recorded one win in their last seven games.

Match of the Day pundit Murphy has been left aghast that Solskjaer could be tasked with steering United in the right direction. The ex-Liverpool and Fulham midfielder believes there are better options.

"Well the Solskjaer one coming back is crazy," Murphy said. "I mean Man United paid him to leave because he ultimately failed and now they're going to pay him to come back?

"I mean it seems ridiculous when you've got options like Michael Carrick, Fletch obviously is a decent coach and then you've got someone like [Roy] Keane, who the fans would love to come back. Ok, some people might think that might be chaotic but he's a leader."

Stephen Warnock was somewhat in agreement. The former Liverpool and Blackburn defender is unsurprised United chiefs might want to wait until the summer given the candidates who could become available, but says he cannot comprehend a move for Solskjaer.

"I think there's a situation now where they obviously thought Amorim leaving the football club was the right decision. Now they know that there's options that are going to become available after the World Cup and there's going to be a decision on a handful of managers," he said.

"Who's going to be there? Tuchel, Ancelotti, Pochettino? There's going to be a lot available so I understand that waiting - I don't understand the Solskjaer one; I don't understand why you go back there."

Fletcher has confirmed he will be in charge for United's next match against Brighton .

"I've spoken to the board, and I'll be in charge for the Brighton game [in the FA Cup ], and then we'll take it from there. It’s one game at a time," he said.
