Michael Carrick has long-term United plans in mind

Manchester United finally picked Michael Carrick over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the head coach position till the end of the season.

With Darren Fletcher out of the race , it was previously thought that INEOS would try to get the duo to work in tandem , as they did a few years ago.

However, that did not prove to be the case as the co-owners went about interviewing them separately .

In the end, due to the input of a few senior stars and the complications regarding appointing the backroom staff for the Norwegian, it was the Englishman who won the race.

Interestingly, the Treble winner, though disappointed, was pleased for his former assistant . It was revealed that the co-owners were not too pleased with the baby-faced assassin’s long-term ambitions .

The legendary striker wanted the job permanently provided he succeeded in guiding the Red Devils back to the Champions League.

Carrick reportedly held no such ambitions, but Teamtalk have revealed otherwise. The ex-England international wants to impress the brains trust so that they consider him for the long-term role in the summer.

“Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the current season but he wants to stay far beyond the end of his prospective contract.

“Sources close to the situation reveal that Carrick, 44, firmly believes he can secure the job permanently, beyond this summer.

“He has proactively put himself forward not just as a short-term stabiliser but as a serious contender for the full-time job, signalling his strong ambition to lead United long-term.

“Carrick wants to earn the long-term role himself, and the team’s performance over the coming months will be crucial in determining whether that becomes a real option for United.”

His details tactical preparations, his previous caretaker stint at the club, and his impressive results with Middlesbrough have impressed the hierarchy.

Now for Michael Carrick to guide the 20-time English league champions into the top-four. Should the club not acquire their desired managerial target in the summer, the former silky smooth operator could see his stint prolonged.
