Alan Shearer doesn't think Manchester United will even finish in the top six this season. Ruben Amorim's side sit seventh in the Premier League table heading into Monday's clash against Everton , after picking up 18 points from their first 11 matches.

They are unbeaten in their last five top-flight fixtures, beating Sunderland , Liverpool and Brighton , and earning draws at Nottingham Forest and Tottenham . It's a run of form that has propelled United from deep inside the bottom half to now in the running for a Champions League spot.

The Red Devils sit just four points behind local rivals and title contenders Manchester City in second, while Arsenal , Chelsea , Sunderland, Tottenham and Aston Villa are the others above United in the table.

United are just on the cusp of the top six right now and ex-Newcastle United forward Shearer has predicted that the Red Devils will remain where they are - or one position below - come the end of the season.

Shearer told Betfair : "The draw at the weekend for Manchester United is an improvement, yeah. They're far from the finished article. I still think there's a lot of work to be done, and I don't expect them to finish in the top six.

"I would think somewhere around 7th-8th, as I said, for Man United, so that is improvement. They were miles off it last season, they were terrible, so for them to finish there and then if they were to finish 6th, 7th, 8th, then yeah, that's improvement. But there's still a lot of work to be done."

United had the fifth-highest net spend in the summer transfer window among Premier League clubs. One of those who signed for the Red Devils was Benjamin Sesko in a deal worth £73.7million.

However, the Slovenia international has endured a slow start to life in England, scoring just twice in 11 top-flight appearances.

While Sesko is now set to miss around a month with a knee injury, Shearer has challenged the ex-RB Leipzig man to improve when he does return. "One player that must do better is Benjamin Sesko," Shearer added.

"I guess, after the 70-odd million pound they paid for him. That was a lot of money, it was too much, but that's the market. He's had a tough start. I don't expect huge things from him though, no.

"I think he's a good player, not sure he's any more than that. I guess he came on at the weekend and had two really good chances, should have put at least one of them away.

"It's been a tough start for him with the money that they've paid."
