Arsenal face an nervous wait to learn the severity of Gabriel Magalhaes ' potential injury blow. The Gunners centre-half was representing Brazil on Saturday afternoon during an international friendly against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium.

Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti selected Gabriel in his starting XI for the fixture in North London, but the Arsenal star was forced off in the second half after suffering a muscle problem.

Ancelotti revealed following the match that Gabriel had sustained an adductor injury, which resulted in the Gunners defender being hauled off in the 64th minute, with Brazil's medical team helping him from the field.

"Bad? I don’t know, he [Gabriel] had a problem on his adductor the medical staff have to check tomorrow," Ancelotti said on Saturday after Brazil's 2-0 win over Senegal, reports football.london .

"We are really sorry for this, really disappointed, when players have an injury I hope they can recover well and soon.”

Arsenal now endure a tense wait to determine the complete severity of the injury, with the Premier League title battle poised to restart next week.

Should Gabriel be ruled out for longer than a week, the defender would miss Arsenal's showdown with Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby on November 23.

If the Brazilian remains sidelined for a fortnight, Arsenal could see Gabriel also unavailable for the Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich on November 26, plus the journey to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the Premier League on November 30.

Arsenal are still waiting to see if Gabriel will be out of action for an extended period, with several key fixtures on the horizon that he could miss if his injury proves severe.

If he's out for three weeks, he'll miss a Premier League double-header against Brentford and Aston Villa within a week.

A four-week absence would also rule him out of a Champions League away trip to Club Brugge and a Premier League clash with Wolves .

And if he's sidelined for longer, he could miss the busy festive period. Arsenal have matches against Everton (December 20), Brighton (December 27) and Villa (December 30) before the end of the year, as well as a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace just before Christmas .

Losing Gabriel would come as a huge blow for Mikel Arteta , with the Brazilian playing a key role in Arsenal's superb defensive record this season.

Arsenal, who saw their lead atop the Premier League table reduced to four points after drawing Sunderland and Manchester City's win over Liverpool , do, however, have apt cover in defence with the likes of Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie and Ben White all capable of filling in at centre back if needed.
