Arsenal legend shocked by Tottenham response to goalkeeper error

Arsenal icon Alan Smith has claimed that Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario endured a ‘low point of his career’ in Saturday’s miserable defeat to Fulham. The Italian stopper made a costly error for Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as his poor clearance fell to Harry Wilson, who fired home into an empty net from range.
That goal ended up being key in Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Fulham - a reverse that leaves them tenth in the Premier League table. Fans certainly made their feelings clear on the goalkeeper’s error, with some choosing to boo his every touch shortly after.
Smith, who was watching the game on Sky Sports , was taken aback by that particularly brutal reaction. He said: “Vicario is getting absolute pelters from his own supporters. He makes a complete hash of his clearance.
“You don’t often see that, do you? Fans booing one of their own, seven minutes into a match. Booing a goalkeeper as well, which is obviously a vital position for the team.
“The fans haven’t been happy with him, but they turned on him violently there. He’s not the only goalkeeper that’s done that – we see goalkeepers come out often and they don’t always get the clearances right.
“But on top of this dreadful home form, it’s not what he or Spurs needed. That will certainly be a low point of Vicario’s career… 50,000 of your own supporters booing you.”
Spurs boss Thomas Frank also gave his verdict on the reaction and claimed those responsible were not true supporters of the club. He said: “I didn’t like that our fans booed at him straight after and a few times after that.

“They can’t be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you’re on the pitch and we do everything we can to perform. I’m fine with them booing after the match, no problem, but not during. That is unacceptable in my opinion. I hope it’s one incident and will never happen again.”
Vicario, 29, was signed from Italian side Empoli back in 2023 for around £17m. He has since gone on to make 93 appearances for the club and has managed to keep 23 clean sheets in all competitions.
He and Spurs will be aiming to get back to form in midweek as Tottenham travel to Newcastle on Tuesday evening. Frank’s side are then back in action next weekend against the Dane’s former side, Brentford, at home.
Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
