Benjamin Sesko injury worse than anticipated as return timeline emerges

Manchester United have suffered a major blow with regards to the availability of Benjamin Sesko .

The Slovenian came on as a substitute in the second half against Tottenham Hotspur on November 8 and lasted 30 minutes before he had to be taken off due to a knee injury.

Ruben Amorim had said after the match that the injury was not as serious as anticipated and he expected the 22-year-old to make a swift recovery.

He did not travel for international duty, and now, as per Sky Sports , scans have said that the former RB Leipzig ace will be out for at least a month.

“Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has avoided major injury and is expected to be out for a month at most, Sky Sports News understands.

“Sesko has missed international duty for Slovenia due to a knee issue picked up against Tottenham.

“Further scans have shown the 22-year-old has avoided any major issues, and he will now undergo a period of rehab running into December.”

This means the United No.30 will miss at least five Premier League games, including big games against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

The club’s medical staff took the call to bring him off as they wanted to avoid a serious injury . And while that might have been avoided, Amorim will be worried given the alternate options at his disposal.

The Red Devils do not have an out-and-out No.9 to cover for Sesko. The head coach could try to play Mason Mount as a false nine, or try and push Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo up top.

Joshua Zirkzee is another option, but he is not a clinical goalscorer. Should the recovery take longer than expected, the 20-time English league champions could be forced to dip into the January transfer market to unearth a solution .

Benjamin Sesko has had a mixed start to his United career. He has scored twice and has registered one assist, but plenty have questioned his adaptation to the English game.

United remain confident in his abilities, but INEOS did take a risk by once again bringing in only one young striker. Now, Amorim has been left to pick up the pieces.
