Two Premier League sides looking to recover from midweek defeats will face off at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Bournemouth welcome Chelsea. This will be the first meeting between the Cherries and the Blues since their 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in January, where Reece James salvaged a dramatic point for Chelsea with a 95th-minute equalizer.

November proved to be a challenging month for Bournemouth, who failed to win any of their four league fixtures (one draw, three losses) and conceded 12 goals in the process. Their struggles continued last weekend as they let a two-goal lead slip in a 3-2 defeat at Sunderland. The Cherries were unable to turn things around at the start of December either, suffering a narrow 1-0 home loss to Everton on Tuesday night, with Jack Grealish’s 78th-minute strike handing Andoni Iraola’s side their first home defeat of the season.

After the match, Iraola criticized his team’s “really poor” performance and cited a lack of energy—especially in midfield—as a key factor in their recent slump. With just two wins in their last 10 league games (four draws, four losses), Bournemouth have slipped from second to 14th in the Premier League table, though they remain only five points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea. Iraola, whose contract expires this summer and who has been linked with several top European clubs, has seen his managerial reputation take a hit amid this poor run.

Chelsea, meanwhile, turned in one of their worst displays of the season on Wednesday, falling 3-1 to relegation-threatened Leeds United—a result that has further dented their already slim title aspirations. Despite recording their highest pass count of the season (630), the Blues created just three clear chances and were defensively vulnerable throughout. Head coach Enzo Maresca admitted after the match that Leeds, who had lost their previous four games, were “better in all aspects.”

Now sitting nine points behind league leaders Arsenal, Chelsea had previously managed well without key playmaker Cole Palmer, losing just two of 16 matches across all competitions. However, the loss of midfield anchor Moises Caicedo to a three-game suspension could prove significant, as Chelsea have only won two of the eight Premier League matches he has missed since joining in 2023.
