Brentford Eyed Postecoglou as Shock Frank Replacement

Brentford are said to have approached Ange Postecoglou to explore the idea of the Australian replacing Thomas Frank in what would have effectively been a job swap shortly after his Tottenham exit.

Frank almost instantly emerged as the red-hot favourite to succeed Postecoglou at the helm after the 59-year-old was sacked by Spurs and the Dane was later confirmed as the club's new head coach just days later after agreeing a three-year deal.

The swift turnaround left Brentford searching for a new manager to replace Frank, who established the Bees as a Premier League club during his seven-year tenure.

Brentford confirmed Keith Andrews, the club's former set-piece coach, as their new boss late last month after weeks of speculation.

But The Athletic have now revealed that Postecoglou was approached over the Brentford vacancy in the immediate aftermath of his exit from Tottenham.

It's said that Postecoglou, who has already been linked with a number of roles since leaving his previous post, was among those considered by Brentford after Frank's exit had been confirmed and contact with the former Celtic and Australia chief was made.

Phil Giles, Brentford's director of football, did discuss the Bees job with Postecoglou, though he was not formally interviewed for the position.

The report adds that both parties were in agreement that Postecoglou should not be considered for the vacancy with Brentford going on to appoint Andrews on a three-year contract.

Andrews, a former Republic of Ireland international, joined the Bees as a set-piece coach last summer and has not been a No 1 before at senior level.

Giles, though, pointed out that all managerial appointments always carry an element of risk in a press conference last week, saying: “There’s always going to be some degree of risk.

“It’s more risky to go and get a coach we don’t know from a club where the environment might be different or maybe people around them made them successful. This is actually quite a low-risk appointment because I know how good Keith is.”
