Bruno Guimaraes injury update ahead of Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Eddie Howe is hopeful that Bruno Guimaraes’ ankle injury is not serious after the Newcastle captain limped off in the win over PSV Eindhoven .

Newcastle ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over their Dutch opposition at St James’ Park, but the Champions League victory was somewhat marred by a concerning injury picked up by Guimares in the first half.

The Brazilian picked up the knock inside the first 20 minutes after a collision with Mauro Junior but was able to continue.

However, the midfielder went down again later in the first half, again holding his ankle, and was eventually forced off on the stroke of half-time having tried to play through the pain again.

The Brazilian has been in superb form for Newcastle this season, notching up eight goals and three assists in 21 Premier League appearances alone.

Howe’s side return to league action on Sunday at home to Villa, with Howe hopeful they can get Guimares back to full fitness as soon as possible.

‘Yeah, a little bit sore. It’s an ankle problem,’ the Newcastle boss said post-match.

‘A little bit of swelling in his ankle. Having just seen him, we hope it’s not serious. Difficult to know.

‘I think Bruno is the type of player that never wants to come off. He always wants to play, so the fact he has come off is a worry for us.

‘We’ll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible.’

Guimaraes’ knock took the shine off what was otherwise an impressive performance from the Magpies, who coasted to victory thanks to goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes.

Newcastle sit seventh in the Champions League table ahead of their daunting final league phase match away against Paris Saint-Germain .

Asked about the trip to Paris to face the defending champions, Howe said: ‘I’ve got a lot of respect for Luis Enrique and the way that he’s coached his team and developed his team to become the team they are today. I think they are a real inspiration to us with their style.

‘It’s difficult to put a label on it but it’s one of the hardest games we can play which will be great for our developement, but we want to try and go there and win of course.’
