Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur Premier League preview, team news and prediction

Burnley host Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon, with both teams in the bottom half of the Premier League table and eager to secure crucial points. This encounter marks their first meeting since the opening weekend in August, when Spurs earned a 3-0 win in Thomas Frank’s debut home match in charge.
Burnley have struggled for form since their 3-2 victory over bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of October, failing to win any of their last 13 Premier League fixtures and remaining at risk of an immediate return to the Championship. However, there have been some encouraging signs recently. The Clarets hammered Millwall 5-1 in the FA Cup third round and managed consecutive draws against Manchester United and Liverpool, salvaging a point at Anfield last weekend.
All six teams at the foot of the Premier League avoided defeat in the previous round, including Scott Parker’s Burnley, who sit 19th—eight points from safety with 16 games remaining. Encouragingly, three of their next four matches are against fellow bottom-half sides. Still, Burnley have struggled at home, scoring just 10 goals—the joint-lowest tally in the league—and have lost six of their last seven Premier League meetings with Tottenham, including the last four since a 1-0 win in February 2022. If they fail to beat Spurs, Burnley will match their longest top-flight winless streak since 1970 and their longest league run without a victory since an 18-game drought in the Championship from December 2006 to March 2007.
Tottenham, meanwhile, eased some of the pressure on head coach Thomas Frank with a vital 2-0 Champions League win over 10-man Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, ending a five-game winless run in all competitions. With automatic last-16 qualification now within reach ahead of their final group match at Eintracht Frankfurt, Spurs must turn their attention back to the Premier League, where they sit 14th and trail the top five by eight points.
Frank’s side have only managed two wins from their last 13 Premier League games, most recently losing 2-1 at home to West Ham United. Only two teams have collected fewer points than Spurs from home matches this season, but their away form has been far more impressive. Tottenham have earned 18 points on the road—second only to Arsenal’s 21—and have claimed 67% of their Premier League points away from home, the highest proportion in the division. Additionally, only Chelsea and Bournemouth (both 19) have scored more away goals than Spurs this season.
Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League away games against promoted sides since a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United in May 2021. They also average 2.2 goals per game against Burnley in the top flight, a rate bettered only against Hull City among teams they’ve faced at least 10 times. However, Spurs have also lost four of their last eight league matches against teams in the relegation zone.
