Chelsea identify next striker transfer target after stance made clear as £90m duo struggle

Chelsea are keen on Atletico Madrid frontman Julian Alvarez with their striker investments to date not bringing the desired results as they consider more reinforcements.

Alvarez put himself on the map when he was at Manchester City , scoring 36 times in two seasons at the Etihad, when he was very much a back-up to Erling Haaland . Nevertheless he continued to show his quality, which led to admiring glances from elsewhere and he headed to La Liga in 2024.

Reports in Spain have claimed that Chelsea are interested in Alvarez, who has also reportedly been on Liverpool radar, and it is claimed the player is not against a return to the Premier League . He enjoyed notable success in England, landing two titles and won the Champions League as well as the FA Cup

Atletico have so far shown no desire to sell Alvarez but it is understood that a summer move is possible if suitors are prepared to pay £87m, which will effectively allow the Spanish side to recoup slight more than their original investment.

Alvarez has scored 40 times during his 18 months at the Wanda Metropolitano, proving himself to be among the top strikers in Europe, and Chelsea have yet to find themselves a prolific frontman.

He was recently asked about the speculation surrounding his future at Atletico, with the World Cup winner replying: "Look, it doesn’t bother me. I try not to pay much attention, but I know what’s being said.

"It’s all over social media. I think it’s more what’s being said online than what’s actually happening. I’m very focused on this season, on what lies ahead with Atletico Madrid. So, I try to tune it out and think about myself, about continuing to grow as a player, and about winning."

Chelsea spent £90m to land Liam Delap and Joao Pedro in the summer but neither man has yet shown they can spearhead a title charge from the final third. Delap's season has been disrupted by the injuries and that has hampered the former Ipswich man, who only has one goal to his name.

Pedro, signed from Brighton , has been more effective but he too has yet to hit double figures. The Blues' hierarchy have shown they're more than happy to continue investing in attackers - signing the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix since they bought the club.
