Could there be more father-son duos at Man Utd soon?

Teenager Jack Fletcher made his debut for Manchester United on Sunday at Aston Villa becoming a part of the second father-son duo in the club's history.

Jack Fletcher is of course the son of Darren Fletcher and his brother Tyler Fletcher is also a part of the Manchester United youth setup after both players switched from Manchester City.

Despite the defeat, it would have been a proud day for the Fletcher family who became a unique part of Manchester United history.

The last time a father and their child both played for United happened recently when Ole Gunnar Solskjær 's daughter Karna Solskjaer made a brief appearance in an FA Cup game away to Bridgwater United back in January 2022.

But the only other time a father and their son both played for the club was quite the success story.

Local lad John Aston was a defender and occasional striker came through the academy and made his debut for the club in September 1946 under Matt Busby and went on to have a successful career, winning the First Division and FA Cup

Aston was United through-and-through once saying: "After my family, United have been the number one love of my life."

For John Aston Sr., his love of United and his family were very much intertwined when his son, John Aston Jr., went on to play for the club. Unlike his father, John Aston Jr. was a winger but he also went on to have success with the Red Devils under Matt Busby.

Aston Jr. was part of the 1966/67 First Division winning side and put in one of his best-ever performances in the European Cup final in the following season as he helped United go on to defeat Benfica 4-1 at Wembley Stadium and was named Man of the Match despite two goals from Bobby Charlton and a fine showing from George Best.

While Darren Fletcher could go on to be the father of two first team Manchester United players should son Tyler, a more defensively-minded midfielder, continue to develop there could still be other father-son duos at the club.

Wayne Rooney's son Kai Rooney has been scoring goals for the U18 team at the age of just 16. The younger Rooney had previously played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. at the club. and the Portuguese youth international could potentially go on to follow his father's footsteps if he continues to develop.

Rio Ferdinand has two sons in the Brighton & Hove Albion academy, goalkeeper Lorenz Ferdinand and chip-off-the-old-block defender Tate Ferdinand . Rio's centre-back partner Nemanja Vidic has teenage son Luka Vidic playing first team football for FK Smederevo 1924. Meanwhile, Nicky Butt's son Ruben Butt has been playing for Salford City despite being just 18.

There's also Shaqueel van Persie who recently made his Feyenoord debut under his father and manager, Robin van Persie. Another great Dutch striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has his son Liam van Nistelrooy pushing for a first team debut for PSV.

Another striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has two sons in the AC Milan academy, Vincent Ibrahimovic and Maximilian Ibrahimovic – the latter of which has been an unused substitute for the first team.
