David Beckham reacts to emotional King Charles meeting
David Beckham was formally knighted by King Charles at Windsor Castle on November 4, receiving recognition for his services to sport and charity, as the 50-year-old England captain described the occasion as deeply emotional.
The investiture recognized his decades-long contribution to soccer and humanitarian work as King Charles presided over the ceremony, which included Beckham 's parents, Ted Beckham and Sandra West .
Beckham has extended his influence beyond the field. He played a key role in London securing the 2012 Olympics and has worked with UNICEF since 2005, with a fund established in his name in 2015 to mark a decade of collaboration.
"It's been a very emotional week," Beckham told PEOPLE. "I wasn't nervous, just emotional, as it means so much to me and my family.
"It was a very special day, and a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life."
He also became an ambassador for King Charles ' foundation in 2024, supporting education programs and environmental initiatives designed to improve youth engagement with nature and community projects across the United Kingdom.
Beckham highlighted his respect for the monarchy and previously queued for over 12 hours to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II lying in state in 2022 after her death at Balmoral in Scotland.
"People know how patriotic I am - I love my country," Beckham said. "I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family.
"I'm lucky enough to have traveled the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy."
How Beckham impressed King Charles at Windsor
Beckham was first appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 and nominated for a knighthood in 2011, reflecting his sustained impact on football and charity over the past two decades.
But on his second royal honor, it was his attire drew particular attention from Britain's 77-year-old Head of State, who ascended in September 2022.
"He was quite impressed with my suit," Beckham said. "He's the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years. My wife made this one."
Victoria Beckham , awarded an OBE in 2017 for services to fashion, designed the morning suit. David modeled it on historical images of King Charles , combining traditional style with a contemporary presentation for the investiture.
Beckham earned 115 caps for England, captaining the team from 2000 to 2006 and appeared in three World Cups, while playing club football for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain .
He is now currently the owner of Inter Miami , where Lionel Messi plays. The club are currently in the MLS Playoffs, and will take on New York City On November 29 for a spot in the championship game.
