David Moyes fears Jack Grealish may require surgery as Everton wait to learn the full severity of his fractured foot.

The 30-year-old has been seen by a specialist over the stress fracture problem, which came to light this week but which has been causing the Everton loanee a problem for some time.

Moyes spoke publicly on the loss of one of his star players for the first time on Friday and was unable to hide his disappointment. And while the Toffees boss wasn't keen to speculate on how long he might be without the England international, he admitted it was a significant setback.

Moyes said: "It's not for me to give the timescales - we've not got it yet from the doctors - but he has a stress fracture in his foot, that's all I can tell you. It's a big blow because he's been hugely important to us since the start of the season, he's played a big part in the team."

Moyes said talks over whether an operation would be needed would be discussed if necessary as he waited for more details on the issue, which emerged after Everton’s impressive win at Aston Villa on Sunday, in which Grealish played the full game as he produced an influential, mature display against his boyhood club.

Grealish suffered a calf injury at Villa Park but conversations about that with medical staff brought up that he had felt pain in one of his feet. Moyes said: “He felt it for a couple of weeks. He is a boy who doesn’t want to be injured and he wants to play every game.

"He picked up a calf injury in the game [at Villa], he got a kick in front of the bench. He came in on Monday for treatment. We got it checked and then he went to see the surgeon to get it checked again. That was it. I asked him and he said he’s had it for a wee while, he could just feel it.”

Moyes acknowledged the supporters would likely be as frustrated as he is by the situation, adding: “It’s a real pity for the boy. He’s been back at it, enjoying it and doing what he is good at. He has been supported brilliantly by the supporters at Everton. They think so much of him and it’s just disappointing he’s going to have some time off. He’s given us something different.

"We have to praise him for that.”
