‘Don’t rule out…’: Man United identify relegation-threatened PL star as January option to reinforce ranks
Manchester United could capitalise on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ precarious Premier League status by making a mid-season approach for Joao Gomes.
Whilst the Old Trafford faithful would’ve loved to see the board move for key midfield targets such as Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba or Elliot Anderson in January, there is an acceptance amongst both the fans and the key decision-makers that winter transfers for any of the trio are highly unlikely.
Their clubs are reluctant to sell them at the best of times, so it’d take some seriously lucrative proposal for them to even consider letting their stars go midway through the campaign.

On the other hand, Wolves’ dismal start to 2025/2026 will undoubtedly have some of their players mulling over their futures at Molineux.
The West Midlands outfit have yet to win a game and sit rock bottom of the table on just two points. They are eight points from safety, meaning, in a lot of people’s eyes, they’re as good as relegated.
Gomes signed for Wolves in 2021 in a £15 million switch from Flamengo , and has since played an integral role at the heart of the team’s midfield.
Having earned 10 Brazil caps since making his debut in March 2024, the 24-year-old will be well aware that moving to the English top flight aided his quest to break through to his nation’s senior setup. Should he drop out of the division, he risks falling in Carlo Ancelotti’s estimations.

In fact, Gomes’ worst-case scenario would see Wolves’ dismal form lead to him being overlooked for next summer’s World Cup, where the Canarinho will be looking to add to their five titles.
As such, plying his trade with the likes of United alongside compatriots Casemiro and Matheus Cunha, could grant him considerably more joy in the second half of the season.
Weighing in on the Reds’ rumoured pursuit of the Wolves star, MailSport’s Nathan Salt stated: “Don’t rule out a more low-cost option such as Joao Gomes.”
