The FA have confirmed that Burnley star Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct after allegedly spitting at supporters . The Tunisian midfielder was accused of the action following the Clarets’ 2-0 victory against Leeds at Turf Moor last month.

The FA took a close look at the incident to establish exactly what had happened. And it has now been confirmed that Hannibal faces a charge.

A statement from the FA on Tuesday read: “Burnley's Hannibal Mejbri has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Saturday 18 October. It's alleged that the player acted in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute. Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday 28 November to provide a response.”

A statement from Lancashire Police shortly after the incident read: "Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor on Saturday 18th October. We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts."

Asked for his view, Burnley boss Scott Parker remained tight-lipped. Speaking earlier this season, he said: “I can't comment on that. There's a live investigation going on regarding that, so I can't really comment on that at this present moment in time.”

Hannibal, 22, started his career with Manchester United and he went on to make 13 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring once. He had loan spells at Birmingham City and Sevilla, before leaving Old Trafford permanently for Burnley in August 2024.

He went on to play a key role for the Clarets as they earned promotion back to the Premier League. He has so far made 11 appearances for Burnley so far in all competitions.

Away from his club action, Hannibal has also made an impression on the international stage, having made 37 appearances for Tunisia. He has been included in his nation's latest squad for upcoming games vs Mauritania and Brazil.

Meanwhile, his side Burnley currently sit 17th in the table after winning three of their opening 11 games of the campaign. Their next game sees them welcome Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea to Turf Moor after the November international break.
