Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United's performance in their 1-0 defeat to Everton , which saw their unbeaten streak come to an abrupt halt. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall netted the only goal of the match, handing United their fourth Premier League loss this season.

The game will be remembered for an incident in the first half where Idrissa Gueye seemed to slap his own Everton teammate, Michael Keane, resulting in the Toffees being reduced to 10 men for most of the match.

Despite having a numerical advantage, United failed to capitalise and suffered their first league defeat since September 27 against Brentford.

Ruben Amorim and his team are now gearing up to take on Crystal Palace in their upcoming Premier League match at the weekend, where they'll be eager to bounce back with a win.

Neville, who was providing commentary for Sky Sports during United's loss to Everton, expressed his dissatisfaction with his former club's tactical approach after Everton had a player sent off, reports the Manchester Evening News .

The ex-United star also criticised Luke Shaw's performance in the second half as United were desperately seeking an equaliser. Neville pointed out the imbalance between the number of United defenders and the Everton players they were marking during an Everton goal-kick.

"You've got five defenders at the back. Why? And they didn't even win the header. Or the second ball. Embarrassing," Neville said on commentary.

The United legend added: "[Luke] Shaw has started to move forward a little bit but he's ambling forward let's be clear.

"He's been bugging me for the last 20 minutes and I am just going to say it. Look at him. You can't do that.

"You should be running forward every single time. I don't care. "What he is doing there is a waste of time, you're not conning anybody. I am not having it."

Neville also offered his thoughts on referee Tony Harrington's decision to issue a red card to Gueye during in the first half at Old Trafford.

"It's a coming together between him and Michael Keane. It always looks unsavoury when it's teammate on teammate," said Neville at the time of the red card.

"Idrissa Gueye has gone over to Keane - he hasn't really reacted. He just pushes him, and then there's not much in it. There's not much in it. I mean, I think Jordan Pickford does a very good job [breaking it up] to be fair to him."

Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez maintained the referee had little choice but to issue the red card to Gueye.

"No I was very surprised because you need to be intense," said Martinez. "You need to be intense. The reaction here, you've got a lot of bodies in the box.

"Obviously it's a bit of a misunderstanding [Gueye trying to play the ball to Keane and they blame each other]. Clearly it's a misunderstanding, Gueye is trying to play the ball but it's that reaction here, that slap, open hand.

"We've been talking about it many times. I think the referee has no other choice. When you see it there, the law tells you any aggression above the neck is a red card."
