Gyokeres can become an Emirates hero in North London derby, says Arsenal legend
Ray Parlour believes Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has the perfect chance to write his name into club folklore when the Gunners take on Spurs in Sunday’s North London derby.
The 27-year-old Swede has impressed since his summer move from Sporting, scoring four times in the Premier League and twice in Europe. But after missing the 2-2 draw at Sunderland with a muscle injury, his fitness remains a key talking point ahead of the clash.
“For Gyokeres, he is the main striker, and if he is fit to start and can make an impact, he should know any goal scored here will even further create a connection with the fans, and he will realise what it means to score in the north London derby,” says Parlour.
“The noise will be loud and the fans' emotions will be high, so to get on the scoresheet is a great thing to do in your first game of this kind.
“We knew as players how important it was and what it meant to the fans. That was enough.”
“We had the likes of Tony Adams as captain, who made it known to the players how important the derby was,” adds Parlour, who made almost 500 appearances for the North London club, winning four FA Cups and three league titles.
“In the week before the game, the training was more intense. You could feel as a group that we were ready. It was important to stay in control, and Tony as well as Patrick Viera were good at this.”
Arsenal sit top of the table after 11 games in the league, unbeaten at home with four clean sheets and 12 goals scored. Spurs, fifth on 18 points, travel across North London aiming to protect their unbeaten away record in this season’s competition.
Thomas Frank’s side head into Sunday’s clash on the back of a 2-2 draw with Manchester United. But they’ll have to overcome an unwanted record. Spurs haven’t won a league game at Arsenal since November 2010.
NetBet currently have Arsenal installed as 19/50 favourites to win on Sunday, with Spurs at 33/5 and a draw at 37/10 .
Viktor Gyokeres is 7/2 to score the first goal and Bukayo Saka 6/4 to score anytime.
Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are both 4/1 to net anytime during the game.

“I will go 3-1 to Arsenal,” predicts Parlour. “Arsenal have a very good home record, and although it’s the first game back after the international break, the players should have a good few days together to be ready.
“They know they are in the title race and need to get the job done in this kind of game. They need the intensity to be high and play on the front foot, put pressure on the opposition, then let the front three do their thing.”
