Harry Amass: Mad rush on for United loanee’s services
Ruben Amorim has come under fire for his reluctance to utilise Manchester United’s academy graduates this season.
Kobbie Mainoo remains the prime example , with the midfielder yet to start a Premier League game in this campaign. Which is why he wants to jump ship in January .
The head coach, who had handed debuts to the likes of Chido Obi , Harry Amass , and Tyler Fredricson last term, called out the club’s academy pipeline before the game against Bournemouth.
He indirectly hinted that the club’s famed young stars might not be as good as fans hype them up to be, citing three most recent examples.
“Toby [Collyer], and this injury, he’s returning here. He is from the academy, he played here, went to West Bromwich, and he’s not playing. He played for Manchester United!
“Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido [Obi] is not always a starter in the Under-21.”
English is not Amorim’s first language so it might have got lost in translation or he might be misinformed, but Harry Amass is certainly not struggling in the second tier of English football.
Far from it, with the 18-year-old adjudged Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month for November. And his performances have caught the attention of multiple EFL sides.
As per The Daily Mail , promotion hopefuls Millwall and Stoke City are among 12 clubs interested in landing the Carrington graduate in January.
It was quite the surprise to see the ex-Watford starlet leave on loan in the summer, that too, to join cash-strapped Sheffield Wednesday, but he seems to be making the most of his opportunities.
His loan deal includes a break clause, and while the Owls would like to keep the youngster at the Hillsborough Stadium, they are yet to reach an agreement with the 20-time English league champions.
“Amorim raised plenty of eyebrows with his comments that academy full back Harry Amass is ‘struggling’ at Sheffield Wednesday.
“While this was later clarified privately to mean Wednesday’s league position – they are bottom of the Championship on minus nine points after deductions for financial difficulties – it certainly left figures close to the player suitably unimpressed.
“Plenty of clubs would disagree that Amass, Wednesday’s player of the month for November, is finding it hard right now. Confidential understands that Championship promotion hopefuls Millwall and Stoke City are among around a dozen teams to have made contact about Amass’ availability in January.
“Amass is loving life at Wednesday and they are eager to keep him for the remainder of the season. But all options remain on the table.”
A move higher up the EFL ladder would suit the Red Devils and the young fullback as he looks to earn a place in the United senior team next season.
His parent club have been impressed with what they have seen from Harry Amass out on loan, and are in talks over a new deal .
