How Man Utd’s 14 young loanees are really faring as Ruben Amorim comments spark backlash

Ruben Amorim’s scathing verdict on Manchester United 's academy players has not gone down well. The United head coach had come under fire in recent months for not involving enough homegrown players throughout his bleak 13-month tenure at Old Trafford, including fan favourite Kobbie Mainoo , 20, who has found minutes hard to come by this season.

Amorim has only handed three youngsters their debuts at United - Tyler Fredricson, Harry Amass and Chido Obi - and has now claimed two of those three, along with Toby Collyer, who debuted under Erik ten Hag, were brought into the first-team fold too soon.

Amorim said: "He (Collyer) played (for United). He's from the academy. He played here. He went to West Bromwich. He's not playing. He played for Manchester United . So sometimes it's not because he's from the academy or whatever.

"It's the situation, what's happened. I don't know what is going to be the future (for Mainoo). Let's see after this match. Amass is now struggling in the Championship . Chido is not always a starter in under-21s. All these guys played when a lot of people were saying sack the manager!"

These comments have sparked fury among United supporters, who believe their manager has thrown young players under the bus. Mirror Football now takes a look at how the 14 youngsters United currently have on loan are performing this season.

Ethan Ennis spent the second half of last season with promotion-winning Doncaster Rovers. The 21-year-old joined Fleetwood on a season-long deal for this campaign and he has played 20 games. The right-winger has already contributed four goals and two assists during his positive loan spell in League Two.

Midfielder Dan Gore picked up an injury shortly after signing for Rotherham last January but he made a strong impression in the time he was available, so he was re-signed for this season. Gore, 21, has been important for Rotherham in midfield, featuring in 26 games across all competitions for the League One side as one of their best players.

Left-sided defender Harry Amass has been a regular since joining Sheffield Wednesday on loan this season. Amorim was likely referencing Wednesday's off-field troubles, with the club having been hit with a 12-point deduction, as opposed to Amass' own performances during his controversial press conference.

Amass has made 16 appearances in the Championship and scored his first senior goal against Southampton . Wednesday want to extend the 18-year-old left-back's loan until the end of the season, suggesting they are delighted with his stint so far.

Having missed the first two games of the League Two season with a minor injury, Elyh Harrison started the next four games for Shrewsbury Town before reporting for England's Under-20s duty in September. Since his absence in September, another young goalkeeper has come into the side and earned first-choice status over the 19-year-old Harrison.

Joe Hugill started the first two games of the campaign for Barnet in League Two but his season was derailed by an injury and he did not play until earlier this month. The 22-year-old striker came off the bench to face Bristol Rovers and played another seven minutes of football in the defeat to Chesterfield.

Centre-back Sonny Aljofree started the first eight games of the campaign for Notts County and notched a goal but he lost his starting role towards the end of September. The 20-year-old has been left out of the matchday squad for the majority of the games since.

Toby Collyer, meanwhile, is back at United recovering from an injury after making four appearances on loan at West Bromwich Albion . The central midfielder, 21, appeared in each of West Brom’s first nine games of the season but has since been in and out of the side due to a muscular problem.

Solihull Moors are midtable in the National League. Louis Jackson started in their first two games of the season but he has struggled to make the XI since. The centre-back, 20, has been absent from their last eight matchday squads.

Enzo Kana-Biyik, 18, scored his first senior goal in October when he salvaged a point for Lausanne in a local derby and was called up to France's Under-20 squad for the November international break. The centre-forward has played a total of 13 games for the Swiss side, mainly as a substitute.

Radek Vitek has started every league game for Bristol City in the Championship, keeping seven clean sheets. The 22-year-old Czech has made some great saves. Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber recently said of Vitek to the Bristol Post : "He’s young, and he looks like an outstanding, experienced Championship goalkeeper."

Jack Moorhouse has made 18 appearances for League One side Leyton Orient but just five of those have been league starts. Yet, the 20-year-old midfielder has shown glimpses of his quality coming off the bench.

Dave Hughes, who coached Habeeb Ogunneye in United's academy, recently left Newport County. That has impacted Ogunneye's role in the squad after the 20-year-old right-back’s strong start, having played 21 matches and scored once, with him being absent from the last two matchday squads.
