Ex-Manchester United defender Wes Brown has confessed he "didn't mind" Andre Onana - despite the Cameroon goalkeeper making a series of expensive mistakes. Onana was anticipated to keep his position as United's No.1 this season despite underwhelming performances during his opening two campaigns at the club.

A hamstring injury ruled him out of pre-season and Altay Bayindir was given the nod between the sticks for the Premier League clashes with Arsenal , Fulham and Burnley . Onana finally received his opportunity against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, a match that would prove decisive for his Old Trafford future long-term.

The shot-stopper found it difficult to cope with both Grimsby goals and while he showed improvement after the break, his display in the penalty shootout was far from convincing. Five days afterwards, United secured Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp and just over a week later, Onana was sent out on loan to Trabzonspor for the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to Mirror Football , BetWright betting ambassador Brown revealed that, though he had no issue with Onana, the errors were becoming problematic. "Having someone of Lammens' quality is all that was needed," he said.

"I actually didn't mind Andre Onana. But there was just something strange with him every game and Manchester United just needed to make that all go away and have a few games where no big mistakes happened.

"Sometimes all you need to say as a goalkeeper is; 'You know what, I'm not going to play it around the back, I'm just going to smack it forward as far as I can.' Lammens, with all the pressure that must have been on his shoulders when he came in, has handled it so well.

"He comes out for crosses and catches really well, which is a big breath of fresh air for everyone. He's really solid and has taken everything in his stride, which is all that you want from your goalkeeper."

While Bayindir retained his spot in goal following Lammens' arrival for matches against Manchester City , Chelsea and Brentford, the Belgian has since cemented himself as first choice.

United remain undefeated since Lammens took over between the sticks and although he's registered just a single clean sheet thus far, there's widespread consensus the new signing has adapted impressively to life at Old Trafford.
