Everton are set to be without Idrissa Gueye for some time following his strange red card against Manchester United . The Toffees' midfielder was shown a straight red card after slapping teammate Michael Keane during a disagreement on the pitch, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford having to get in between the two.
The referee saw the incident and quickly brandished the red card to Gueye. VAR checked the decision and agreed with the red card.
The Premier League Match Centre official X account explained: "The referee's call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane."
Speaking on Sky Sports ' commentary, summariser Gary Neville said: "It's a coming together between him and Michael Keane. It always looks unsavoury when it's teammate on teammate.
"Idrissa Gueye has gone over to Keane - he hasn't really reacted. He just pushes him, and then there's not much in it. There's not much in it. I mean, I think Jordan Pickford does a very good job [breaking it up] to be fair to him."
The red card won't only see Gueye miss the remainder of Everton 's match against United. Being sent off for violent conduct means that he will also face a three-game ban.
He will therefore miss Premier League games against Newcastle (H), Bournemouth (A) and Nottingham Forest (H). The midfielder is also likely to receive a fine from the FA and possibly even his own club.

The ban means that Gueye is not going to be available for Everton very much over the next couple of months. The suspension means that he could make a comeback against Chelsea on 13 December.
However, his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal means that he could again be unavailable until mid-January when the tournament finishes.
The competition starts on Sunday, 21 December, meaning that he is unlikely to be unavailable for Everton for their Premier League clash against Arsenal on Saturday, 20 December - and could even miss the clash against Chelsea the week before, depending on when he heads to Morocco.
Despite the player disadvantage, Everton took the lead in the first half through summer signing Kieran Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder put the ball into the net in the 29th minute giving Everton something to hold on to.
