IFAB backs exploring wider VAR use on second yellow cards and corners

IFAB has signalled support for targeted expansions to VAR, notably around dismissals after a second yellow card and corners awarded in error.

According to L'Équipe, its annual business meeting on Tuesday examined ways to speed up play and improve fairness, with VAR’s scope central to discussions.

Three specific extensions were put forward. Where clear evidence exists, video officials could be permitted to intervene if a second yellow leading to a dismissal is judged incorrect, or when a disciplinary sanction is applied to the wrong team.

IFAB also suggested allowing immediate checks on corners clearly given by mistake, provided the verification is instantaneous and does not delay the restart.

It said it was in favour of referee body cameras. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for 28 February, when these measures could be on the agenda.
