Inter Milan 1-3 Arsenal: Gunners seal top-two finish with seventh straight Champions League win

Gunners into round of 16 with a game to spare

Arsenal have confirmed a place in the Champions League round of 16 after beating Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

A brace from Gabriel Jesus and a fine strike from substitute Viktor Gyokeres secured a 3-1 win for Arsenal and the result means they have guaranteed a top-two finish in this season’s league phase.

Before a ball had even been kicked at the San Siro, news of Manchester City’s shock defeat away at Bodo/Glimt earlier in the evening filtered through, handing the Gunners a huge boost.

A brace from Kasper Hogh and a strike from Jens Petter Hauge downed ten-man City , and in the process, confirmed Arsenal's place in the round of 16 with two games to spare.

However, needing a win to seal a top-two finish, Mikel Arteta’s side set about getting the job done and took a deserved lead inside ten minutes when Jesus reacted quickest in the are to turn home Jurrien Timber’s scuffed shot.

The lead did not last long as Petar Sucic equalised with a thunderous effort from just inside the area that flew into the top corner after Arsenal failed to clear their lines.

Chances were aplenty for both sides in an entertaining first half but it was the visitors who took a lead into the break, courtesy of yet another set-piece.

Bukayo Saka’s cross found Leandro Trossard at the back post and he did well to keep the ball alive for an alert Jesus to head the ball into the back of the net for his second of the night.
