It's been a chastening few weeks for Liverpool and Mohamed Salah , with the Premier League champions' talisman looking a shell of the player who fired them to the title in Arne Slot 's maiden season.

He has scored just twice in the Reds' last seven games, six of which have ended in defeat. And with Liverpool now in crisis territory, the Egypt international has been called out by Kop favourite Jamie Carragher as the pressure begins to grow on everyone at Anfield.

It was Virgil van Dijk who fronted up again after Liverpool's latest loss; a bruising 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest . But Carragher feels others should be sticking their head above the parapet rather than the Reds captain - with Salah singled out in brutal fashion by the Sky Sports pundit.

Carragher's comments are not the first time he's taken aim at Salah, including last year when he spoke about his contract saga. And he's even had a pop at his agent...

It was back in the summer of 2022 that Carragher lashed out at Salah's agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, on social media amid speculation over the attacker's future.

At the time, there was talk Salah would not be offered the new contract that Liverpool fans were desperate to be put in front of him. And Abbas Issa's posts on X, formerly Twitter , were seemingly adding fuel to the fire in Carragher's view.

"All Reds love your client, and if he is to leave next summer we will wish him well & say a big thank you," Carragher wrote on X. "But we can do without this cryptic crap for the next 12 months! @MoSalah have a word!!"

Shortly after it was confirmed Salah had signed a new three-year deal, with Carragher quipping he and the star's agent had "fooled them all".

Two years on from his skirmish with Salah's agent, an explosive mixed zone interview from the player revealing he hadn't been offered a new contract didn't sit well with Carragher .

He slammed the "selfish" star, saying: “Of course there’s been discussions, yeah. Right now, there’s obviously a big difference in the valuation. Whatever Mo Salah and his agent value themselves at, whether that be financially or in terms of length of contract, and what Liverpool do.

“So the reason Liverpool wouldn’t have offered a contract yet is because Mo Salah will turn it down. So they're still in talks, I’m desperate for them to meet in the middle.

“But I must say, I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night after the game when it comes out. Liverpool have got Real Madrid midweek and they’ve got Manchester City at the weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool right now.”

Carragher's rant concluded with the pundit once again accusing his agent of dropping cryptic tweets, which Salah responded to with a dig of his own shortly afterwards during a Sky interview.

This time around, there is no contract drama; Salah was rewarded for his stellar form with a new contract towards the end of last season but has been largely ineffective this term.

He is not alone in struggling right now in a Liverpool team which looks worse after a significant summer of spending in the transfer market.

But Carragher has questioned why Van Dijk is the only one fronting up right now and wants to hear more from Salah, claiming the star only speaks "when he gets man of the match or needs a new contract".

Speaking on Monday Night Football about Liverpool's malaise, Carragher said: "I don't know [what's gone wrong]. Nobody knows. The manager sees the players every day and he can't quite fix it at the moment. We are talking about a manager who has won the Premier League .

"I think Virgil van Dijk, after the game, has come out again and spoke as he should do as the captain and called Liverpool a mess. I must say on the back of all these Liverpool defeats it's always Van Dijk who comes out. And as I have said, the captain should do that but there should be other players in that dressing room coming out and speaking for the club.

"A year ago this weekend, Mo Salah wasn't shy in coming out and speaking about his own situation, about the club not offering him a contract.

"I only ever hear Salah speak when he gets man of the match or he needs a new contract. I would like to see Salah come out as one of the leaders, one the legends of Liverpool, come out and speak for the team. It shouldn't always be the captain."
