Jonathan Woodgate ‘set for’ Manchester United role after Michael Carrick appointment
Jonathan Woodgate is set to join Manchester United’s coaching staff under Michael Carrick, who is expected to lead the club on an interim basis until the summer following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
BBC Sport reports that Woodgate will work alongside Steve Holland, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion in Carrick’s backroom team.
Despite 17 Premier League matches remaining, Old Trafford decision-makers have opted to install an interim before a permanent summer appointment. Carrick emerged as the frontrunner over the weekend, with reports on Tuesday suggesting an agreement had been reached.
Woodgate worked under Carrick at Middlesbrough , the pair narrowly missed the Championship play-offs last season. After that, the club sacked the head coach and appointed Rob Edwards, who has since left for Wolves.
A Middlesbrough native, Woodgate broke through at Leeds in 1998 and left for Newcastle in January 2003, one of the early departures before relegation in 2004.
Spells followed at Real Madrid, Middlesbrough , Tottenham and Stoke before he retired back at the Riverside.
He began coaching as a Middlesbrough assistant in 2017, had brief managerial stints at Boro and Bournemouth, then returned to Carrick’s staff.
Woodgate also played alongside Jason Wilcox at Leeds and is expected to reunite with him, with the 54-year-old now United’s director of football. He could be in the Old Trafford dugout against Leeds on Saturday, April 11, a date subject to broadcast changes.
