Joyce and Ornstein explain why Isak is bracing for worst after Spurs injury

Liverpool’s Tottenham win should have been remembered for a crucial away victory, but fresh reporting suggests the focus may instead shift towards a worrying injury concern.

According to Paul Joyce, Northern Football Correspondent for The Times , Liverpool fear Alexander Isak has suffered a significant lower-leg injury after scoring in north London.

The Sweden international was caught by Micky van de Ven while finishing from a Florian Wirtz pass, with his leg sandwiched during the challenge.

Isak required lengthy treatment and was helped from the pitch in visible discomfort, with the early mood inside the club described as gloomy while scans are awaited.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has since added to that concern, reporting that Liverpool fear the record signing may have sustained a suspected broken leg.

When two of the most reliable reporters around Liverpool align on a medical issue, it is rarely something we can brush aside.

Joyce noted surprise among Liverpool staff that the challenge went unpunished, particularly in a match where red cards were shown elsewhere.

Ornstein’s report stated that the nature of the injury would typically result in at least a few months out of action, depending on scan results.

That sits uncomfortably alongside the brief optimism offered immediately after full-time, when Alisson said , “Yeah, I think he’ll be okay,” while adding that we are “hoping it’s just a knock.”

Arne Slot admitted his own concern , saying post-match that when a player “doesn’t even try to come back… that’s usually not a good thing,” while stressing that nothing medical had yet been confirmed.

Physio Scout later analysed the incident and explained that the scissor-style tackle mechanism often raises fears of a high ankle sprain, with potential recovery windows ranging from two weeks to as long as 12.

The timing could not be worse for us.

Mo Salah is away at AFCON, while Cody Gakpo, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni are already sidelined, stretching depth across the squad.

Isak’s goal against Spurs was only his second in the Premier League since arriving from Newcastle, but it also marked his first assist received from Wirtz, a connection Slot openly hoped would develop further.

If the 26-year-old is facing an extended lay-off, that partnership is put on hold before it even begins.

It would also place greater responsibility on Hugo Ekitike, who continues to settle quicker at Anfield and delivered again with the winning goal against nine-man Spurs.

For now, Liverpool wait on scan results, but with Joyce and Ornstein both flagging serious concern, this is one injury update we cannot afford to dismiss lightly.
