Just in: Man Utd in direct contact with league champions for ‘shattered’ star
Manchester United and Napoli are reportedly embroiled in direct talks for Kobbie Mainoo , who could be on the move in January.
The 20-year-old might be one of the most popular figures among the fanbase, but Ruben Amorim doesn’t consider him a first choice, to say the least. In fact, the young player has yet to start a Premier League contest this season.
And with the World Cup looming ever closer, the Englishman is no longer in consideration for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, unless he manages to pull off a sensational upturn in the second half of the season.
But since his situation at United won’t dramatically change overnight, a January move would be his best bet for a timely revival.
In recent months, Napoli have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Mainoo. The Serie A champions have one of the most formidable midfield units in Europe, which includes Scott McTominay.
However, this department has been ravaged by injuries, as Kevin De Bruyne, Stanislav Lobotka, Andre Zambo Anguissa and Billy Gilmour are all unavailable at this stage.

According to esteemed Italian football journalist Alfredo Pedulla , Napoli have been in contact with Man Utd for Mainoo. The Partenopei have informed the Premier League giants they would be interested in signing the midfielder if there’s an opening in January.
With only four central midfielders at his disposal, Amorim will be reluctant to offload the United academy product.
But at the same time, he has yet to show the youngster the sort of confidence that would encourage him to linger at Carrington. In fact, Mainoo is said to be ‘shattered’ by the manager’s treatment .
The England international may consider Man Utd his home, but even club legend Rio Ferdinand has urged Mainoo to leave Old Trafford for his own sake.
Aside from injuries to Bruno Fernandes or Casemiro, the young midfielder is unlikely to break into the Man Utd starting lineup anytime soon.
On the other hand, Napoli are offering him the chance to experience a new and exciting lifestyle, as well as the opportunity to reach new heights, similar to his former teammates, McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.
Hence, if Mainoo were to vigorously request a transfer next month, very few would blame him.
