Looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to three matches—a notable feat given recent form—Liverpool travel to Elland Road to take on newly-promoted Leeds United on Saturday. Arne Slot’s side managed to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday, while Leeds shocked title hopefuls Chelsea with a convincing 3-1 victory at home.

It took Liverpool 14 gameweeks to register their first draw of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, but they were fortunate to avoid what could have been a seventh league defeat. Deflected goals from Chemsdine Talbi and Florian Wirtz—credited as a Nordi Mukiele own goal—saw the Reds share the spoils with Sunderland. Slot, however, had Federico Chiesa to thank for a crucial late block that denied Wilson Isidor a likely winner.

Given Sunderland’s impressive record this season—neither Arsenal nor Chelsea have managed to beat them, with the Blues even losing at home—a midweek draw is far from disastrous for Liverpool. Nevertheless, the result has intensified speculation about Slot’s future at Anfield. Despite this, the club reportedly has no intention of making a managerial change, and Liverpool remain in the top half of the table, though they trail leaders Arsenal by a considerable 11 points.

Leeds, meanwhile, haven’t taken the top flight by storm in the same way as Sunderland, but Daniel Farke drew inspiration from Regis Le Bris’s tactics when Chelsea visited Elland Road. For the second time this season, the Club World Cup winners were beaten by a newly-promoted side, as Jaka Bijol, Ao Tanaka, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin fired Leeds to a memorable midweek win.

Farke’s men had already shown promise with a spirited second-half comeback attempt against Manchester City, and the manager’s decision to deploy a 3-5-2 formation from the outset paid dividends on Wednesday. The victory ended a four-game losing streak and lifted Leeds out of the relegation zone into 17th place, though West Ham United could push them back into the bottom three if they defeat Manchester United by at least two goals on Thursday.
