Liverpool 2-1 Southampton: Hugo Ekitike sent off after scoring late winner in Carabao Cup clash

Federico Chiesa assisted both goals as the Reds left it late to down the Saints

Hugo Ekitike was sent off after scoring a late winner for Liverpool as they knocked Southampton out of the Carabao Cup .

Alexander Isak capped a timid first half from the hosts with his first goal in Liverpool colours, firing home from Federico Chiesa’s cross after he nicked a loose pass at the back.

A similarly uninspiring second-half showing from the Reds saw Southampton equalise through Shea Charles with a quarter of an hour remaining.

But Chiesa turned provider again, teeing up Ekitike’s winner after being played in behind by a pinpoint long-ball from Andy Robertson.

Ekitike tapped home and took off his shirt in celebration. Already carrying a booking, he was shown a yellow card and dismissed.
