Major shock as Premier League winner named new manager of League Two strugglers
Former Premier League champion Christian Fuchs has been appointed as boss of League Two side Newport County in a surprise move. The ex- Leicester man has penned a long-term deal at Rodney Parade.
Explaining the move, Newport chairman Huw Jenkins said: “We see Christian as the sort of man to lead our club forward. I believe he matches our ambition and goals for Newport County FC.
“I do feel we can now look forward with a great deal of optimism. We’ll look to improve our current situation in League Two and take things from there.
“Christian is ambitious and wants, one day, to manage in the Premier League , we believe he shares our strong belief in what Newport County can eventually become.”
Fuchs arrives at Newport with a huge task on his hands. The Welsh side find themselves propping up the entire Football League, having won just three times in their opening 16 games.
David Hughes was only appointed as the club's manager in the summer but was sacked last week following their latest defeat.
Fuchs' managerial debut with Newport will come this weekend against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. He was intriguingly spotted in attendance for Newport's clash with Accrington Stanley last month amid talk that he could be appointed.

Fuchs, 39, had a successful career in Germany with Bochum, Mainz and Schalke before moving to Leicester City in 2015. He then famously helped the Foxes to a shock Premier League crown during his debut campaign.
The former Austrian international also helped Leicester to win the FA Cup during the 2020/21 season under Brendan Rodgers before leaving for MLS side Charlotte FC. In all, Fuchs made 152 appearances for Leicester throughout his career at the King Power Stadium and scored on three occasions.
Fuchs spent just one season with Charlotte FC before retiring, while he then moved into coaching and was a member of former Aston Villa and Leicester boss Dean Smith's backroom team in the USA.
Fuchs' final season with Charlotte saw the side finish fourth in the Eastern Conference but they were eliminated from the end-of-season playoffs by New York City.
His former side Leicester find themselves back in the Championship following relegation under Ruud van Nistelrooy . They sit 12th in the table ahead of this weekend's clash with Stoke City .
