Manchester City will be aiming for their 10th Premier League victory of the season when they host Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. This will be the first meeting between the two sides since March 2017, when City claimed a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light, courtesy of goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane.
After nearly letting a two-goal lead slip before securing a dramatic 3-2 stoppage-time win over Leeds United last weekend, City were once again tested in midweek, surviving a furious second-half comeback from Fulham to edge a nine-goal thriller 5-4 at Craven Cottage. The Citizens appeared to be in control at 5-1 with just over 30 minutes remaining, but defensive lapses allowed Fulham to claw back with three unanswered goals. Only a crucial 97th-minute goalline clearance from Josko Gvardiol preserved the points for City.
The match was also notable for Erling Haaland reaching 100 Premier League goals in record time, but manager Pep Guardiola admitted he had “no answer” for his team’s second-half collapse and warned that even a single slip-up could make catching leaders Arsenal “so difficult” in the title race. Arsenal could stretch their lead to eight points with a win at Aston Villa in Saturday’s early kickoff, before second-placed City take on a Sunderland side they have beaten in each of their last seven meetings, outscoring them 20-6 in that span.
City have also dominated newly-promoted teams, winning 24 of their last 26 Premier League matches against such sides (drawing the other two). They enter this weekend’s fixture looking to secure a seventh consecutive home league win, having already netted a league-high 19 goals at the Etihad this season.
Sunderland, in contrast, were not as fortunate on their recent visit to Craven Cottage, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat. However, they have bounced back impressively, collecting four points from their last two league outings against Bournemouth and Liverpool. After overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Bournemouth 3-2 at home last weekend, the Black Cats came close to a famous win at Anfield on Wednesday. Chemsdine Talbi’s goal had them in front, but an unfortunate own goal from Nordi Mukiele in the 81st minute saw the match end 1-1.
Head coach Regis Le Bris praised his players’ resilience and the support of the travelling fans, noting the team’s growing belief that they can compete anywhere as they continue to adapt impressively to life back in the top flight. Le Bris, who celebrates his 50th birthday on Saturday, has encouraged his squad to show their “qualities” once again as they look to solidify their place in the Premier League’s top six and possibly break back into the top four.
Sunderland have not beaten Manchester City since a 1-0 victory under Martin O’Neill in November 2013. The Black Cats have lost 299 of their 622 Premier League matches to date, and another defeat this weekend would make them the ninth club to reach 300 losses in the division—doing so in fewer games than any other club, a record currently held by Fulham (682 matches).
