Adam Wharton has a plan to play in the Champions League as Manchester United plot a big-money swoop for the midfielder. The Crystal Palace and England star is right at the top of the Red Devils’ short-list ahead of an overhaul of the United squad.
Any deal does not look like it will be cheap, however. Wharton, 21, is anticipated to cost around £70m should he leave Crystal Palace in the near future.
Speaking about the midfielder’s future, his agent James Featherstone has confirmed that Wharton has ambitions of playing at the highest level and there is already a plan in place to get him there.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “When he was at Blackburn we sat down and spoke about shooting for the stars and playing for England.
“So how do you get there? Personally I think to play for England you have to play Champions League , to play in the Champions League you have got to play for one of the top teams in one of the top leagues.
“That jump to a Champions League team, I think you can get lost. The plan below that was to play for a Premier League team
“We have got a plan. He is 21. I have to check myself to remember that every now and then. It doesn’t have to be achieved yesterday, today or this moment.
“He has got his in-game, in-season targets and goals. He has got to do his bit and the rest will look after itself in a very structured, calm way to ultimately add value and maximise his ability.”

Wharton has shone for Palace since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers last year. He has since made 62 appearances in all competitions for the Eagles, helping the side win the FA Cup and to a place in Europe.
Wharton has also earned international recognition, having compiled three caps for the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel. The midfielder still has three-and-a-half years to run left on his contract at Selhurst Park.
He is not the only midfielder that United have identified as a potential signing. Brighton ’s Carlos Baleba, as well Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher are also options for the Red Devils.
Should any of the trio arrive at Old Trafford in the near future, that could potentially open the door to Kobbie Mainoo departing. The academy graduate is reportedly eyeing a January exit after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim.
