Manchester United's Bryan Mbeumo was visibly gutted after Cameroon's World Cup dreams were dashed. The Indomitable Lions needed a victory in Thursday night's play-off to keep their hopes of playing in this summer's tournament in North America alive.

Mbeumo was on the pitch from the start for Cameroon as they faced off against DR Congo in Morocco. The match remained deadlocked until the 91st minute.

That's when Chancel Mbemba slipped in at the back post to send the ball past United loanee Andre Onana, triggering jubilant celebrations from the DR Congo side and leaving the Cameroon players devastated at full-time.

This result means that DR Congo will now go head-to-head with Nigeria in the final, with the victors securing a spot in this summer's World Cup.

After Cameroon's loss, Mbeumo couldn't conceal his disappointment. Footage circulating on social media shows the United striker clearly upset as he walks down the tunnel alone, pausing only briefly to exchange a quick handshake with a member of the coaching staff.

Mbeumo is now set to return to United and begin preparations for the Premier League showdown against Everton following the international break. The 26-year-old has been a standout performer for United this season, bagging the Premier League player of the month award for October.

In his last four Premier League matches, he has found the back of the net four times, including scoring the first goal against Tottenham in the 2-2 draw before the international break .

While they failed to book a place in the World Cup, United could be without Mbeumo, along with teammate Amad , for up to six Premier League matches due to their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations , which kicks off next month. The tournament, running from 21 December to 18 January, will also see United lose Mbeumo and Amad, who is set to represent Ivory Coast.

United boss Ruben Amorim admitted the loss of both players would be a blow, but insisted it would provide an opportunity for others in the squad. He said: "We are going to struggle a little bit, but we already knew it's going to be an opportunity,

"When I watch the training, there are players that should be playing.

"But it's hard with one game to take some players from the team, because they are doing well also during the training in games. So other players are going to have the opportunity to help us.

"They are understanding the way we want to play, so if we are improving on that, the change of characteristics is not going to change the idea or the momentum of the team. But let's use Amad and Bryan in these games and we will see in general."
