It's been a busy week for Manchester United , who are balancing finding a new head coach with scouting the January transfer window after sacking Ruben Amorim . The Portuguese tactician was given his walking papers on Monday morning, with the Red Devils citing that the decision was made to give the club the "best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."
Darren Fletcher took the reins as interim head coach for United's league tie with Burnley on Wednesday, but considering the game finished in a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor , the board may be looking for someone a little more seasoned to take control until season's end, when they will properly assess their options.
Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have been linked with taking up a temporary position until May, with the club set to hold talks with both men this week. Whichever man is chosen for the task at hand may be offered the opportunity to reinforce the first-team this month.
With all things considered, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the names who have recently been linked with a move to Old Trafford...
Scott McTominay has been linked with a sensational return to the north west after thriving in Napoli. The Scot joined the Serie A outfit in 2024, and helped Gli Azzurri clinch the league title in his maiden season.
However, should Solskjaer be given the interim head coaching role at Old Trafford, he could advocate for the Red Devils to go back in for their academy graduate. Speaking about the midfielder in 2019, Solskjaer said: "He's been excellent, and now that him and Fred work in a good relationship, work well together [sic] did that last season, PSG , when we had a few injuries and now as well they are working as a pair.

"Scotty's a leader, a Manchester United boy, you can see he's been a striker with the goal at Norwich on a half turn, but he's developing into a very good midfielder."
It's clear that United are lacking in midfield at present, with Bruno Fernandes dropping into a deeper role alongside an ageing Casemiro, whose future at the club beyond the current campaign is unknown. Elsewhere, Kobbie Mainoo has seen his game time limited as of late, while Manuel Ugarte looks to be nearing the exit.
With all that in mind, McTominay could certainly be the exact player that the Premier League giants are lacking at present,. And with Solskjaer potentially at the wheel once again, it could certainly tempt the 29-year-old back to the club where he made a name for himself given their relationship.
As per reports, Ajax have set their sights on snapping up Ugarte this month. A report from Dutch publication VI suggests that the Uruguayan is open to the idea of a move to the Eredivisie sensations after failing to make much of a mark in the Premier League.

A loan deal looks the most viable option on Ajax's side until the end of the season, albeit, his reported weekly wage of £120,000 could prove problematic. It could also cause United to negotiate on the percentage of the salary which Ajax would be prepared to cover.
Since making his way to Old Trafford from PSG in a £42.1million move in 2024, Ugarte has made 61 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United to date.
As a result of impressing in Brazil, Manchester United are among a number of clubs who have been linked with 20-year-old midfielder, Breno Bidon. It is reported that Corinthians value the talent at around £26m this winter - a fee which could be alluring to the Red Devils considering their current woes in the engine room.
However, securing the centre-mid may be far from smooth sailing for United, considering Arsenal and Sporting CP have also been linked with him.
Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
