Manchester City advance on second January signing

Manchester City are pushing hard to win the race to sign Marc Guehi this month.

City have tabled a lucrative offer to the Crystal Palace captain, in a bid to fend off interest from rivals including Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Liverpool came close to signing Guehi in the summer but saw a £35m deadline day deal fall through in the closing stages of the window.

Guehi has entered the last six months of his deal at Selhurst Park and can leave the club on a free transfer in the summer, as things stand. However, City want to sign Guehi amid absences in their squad.

Manchester City currently have Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol sidelined by hamstring and ankle issues respectively, while John Stones is also out. The latter is out of contract in the summer and there are doubts over whether he’ll be offered an extension, given fitness issues in recent campaigns.

City view Guehi as an ideal market opportunity to solve their current injury issues. A fee between £30m and £40m is expected to be enough to persuade Palace to sell mid-season, given Guehi’s expiring deal.

Several of the sides interested in Guehi would prefer to wait until the summer when he becomes a free agent, but City’s move this month could lead to rival bids.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that City’s pursuit is now advanced after a significant offer was submitted to the player.
