Manchester City dominated much of the early play with Lauren Hemp and Bunny Shaw opening up the Reds on multiple occasions inside the opening five minutes. As the game stretched on, both sides had good opportunities to break the deadlock. In the end it was the hosts who opened the scoring. Rebecca Knaak headed the ball beyond Safia Middleton-Patel in the 26th minute to get the goal scoring action underway. The remainder of the first half passed with Manchester United enjoying marginally more of the ball. Just before the break Bunny Shaw made it two to the hosts, tapping in Kerstin Casparij’s assist. Deep into injury time Lauren Hemp added a third with an absolute rocket of a shot from the edge of the area.
The second half began in a similar fashion with the hosts dominating the early exchanges. There was an extended stoppage early in the second period as Ella Toone required treatment on the pitch. A stretcher was initially brought over to the touchline, however the No.7 was able to continue.

The introduction of Melvine Malard added a new dimension to United’s attack with the No.9 creating space down the wings following her introduction. Despite the visitors renewed attacking threat, City held on to their three goal lead, sealing a title contender’s afternoon at the Etihad Stadium.
A nasty clash of heads in added time left both Jade Rose and Simi Awujo requiring treatment with the latter forced to come off.
The win leaves City top of the table with a four point lead over their nearest rivals.
