Marc Guehi: United want Crystal Palace ace to replace Harry Maguire
Manchester United could be tempted to strengthen their backline in 2026 to address Harry Maguire’s uncertain future.
The Englishman has divided opinion ever since leaving Leicester City for the Theatre of Dreams in the summer of 2019.
However, Maguire has been a key figure under Ruben Amorim of late. Although he is no longer a first-team regular for the Red Devils, the 32 year old has delivered whenever he has been called upon this season.
Maguire has made nine appearances across competitions this season, five of which were starts. The Englishman has even chipped in with two goals, including his famous winner against Liverpool at Anfield last month.

However, with the player already on the wrong side of 30, it is imperative for United to put succession plans in place. Maguire’s contract also expires at the end of this season, and he is yet to sign a new deal.
With Lisandro Martinez struggling to stay fit and Luke Shaw no spring chicken either, the Premier League giants could turn to the market for solutions. It now appears that they have set their sights on another English defender as the answer.
According to The Daily Mail’s Nathan Salt, United have identified Marc Guehi as a possible replacement for Maguire. The Crystal Palace defender will enter the final six months of his contract in January and could be available on a free transfer next summer.
“Expect United to be watching Marc Guehi’s situation with interest given his contract will be six months from expiring.”
“A centre back is on the agenda with limited progress made on extending Harry Maguire’s deal, which expires in the summer. He will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad in around six weeks’ time as things stand.”
Marc Guehi could prove a strong replacement for Maguire, and his contract situation would suit United’s finances as well.
United are likely to focus most of their resources on midfield reinforcements in 2026, with the position fast emerging as the team’s weak spot.
Having already splashed around £200 million this summer, the Red Devils may struggle to find additional funds for other positions next year.
Guehi’s availability on a free transfer, therefore, represents a golden opportunity for the English giants. The defender’s leadership qualities could also be a welcome addition to Amorim’s backline, although securing his services will not be easy.
Liverpool were a whisker away from signing Guehi this summer and are likely to return for him next year. Several other clubs are expected to be in the race as well, but United’s chances would be boosted if they manage to finish in the top four this season.
