Aiming to climb back into the top half of the Premier League, Newcastle United host a struggling Burnley side at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies cruised to a 4-1 victory in their most recent top-flight encounter with the Clarets in May 2024, with Bruno Guimaraes among the scorers.

After alternating between wins and losses over a seven-match stretch in all competitions, Newcastle were forced to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at home on Wednesday night. Goals from substitutes Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon had put the Magpies on course for all three points, but Cristian Romero’s 95th-minute overhead kick rescued a draw for Spurs, denying Newcastle a third consecutive league win.

Manager Eddie Howe was left frustrated by the late setback and rued his side’s lack of clinical finishing, despite finding the net twice. Nevertheless, Newcastle remain 12th in the Premier League, just three points off seventh-placed Brighton.

There are still positives for the Magpies, who have now extended their unbeaten run at St James’ Park to seven matches in all competitions (six wins, one draw). They have also won all three of their home league games this season against teams currently below them in the table. Furthermore, Newcastle have claimed victory in five of their last six top-flight home fixtures against promoted sides and have won each of their last six Premier League meetings with Burnley, scoring 14 goals in the process—reasons for optimism this weekend.

Burnley, meanwhile, continue to struggle. Despite manager Scott Parker’s call for a vibrant atmosphere at Turf Moor on Wednesday, the Clarets fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Daniel Munoz scored the decisive goal just before halftime, and Burnley managed just two shots on target from ten attempts. Parker has since admitted he feels “weak in his position” as his side continues to fall short in tight matches.

Since their 3-2 win over Wolves at the end of October, Burnley have lost five straight Premier League games, leaving them 19th in the table and four points from safety. Avoiding a sixth consecutive defeat will be a tough ask, as Burnley have lost six of their seven away league matches this season—only Wolves have a worse away record—and have conceded a league-high 21 goals on the road.
