Although Newcastle have won six of their last 10 matches in all competitions, their Premier League form this season has been disappointing. The Magpies have lost three of their previous five league fixtures, conceding three goals in each of their last two defeats. However, they have managed to find the net in each of their last 11 matches across league and cup competitions.

Newcastle went into the final international break of 2025 on a low, having suffered consecutive Premier League losses on the road to West Ham United and Brentford. They were beaten 3-1 by Brentford two weeks ago, despite taking an early lead through Harvey Barnes.

After finishing in the top five last season, Newcastle have struggled to replicate that success, recording just three wins from their opening 11 league games (D3 L5). They currently sit 14th in the table, only two points clear of the relegation zone and seven points adrift of local rivals Sunderland, who occupy fourth place.

Head coach Eddie Howe, who continues to enjoy the full backing of the club’s hierarchy, has called for a strong reaction from his players during what he describes as a “relentless” upcoming fixture schedule. Howe insists that Newcastle “cannot allow any sort of negative trend to continue” if they hope to climb the table this season.

The Magpies will be glad to return to St James’ Park, where they have won each of their last five home matches in all competitions, scoring at least twice in every game. In fact, 75% of their Premier League points this season (9 out of 12) have come at home, including a recent 2-1 victory over Fulham.

However, Newcastle’s record against Saturday’s opponents, Manchester City, is poor. They have won only once in their last 35 Premier League meetings with City (D6 L28)—a 2-1 home win in January 2019 under Rafael Benitez. Eddie Howe himself has never beaten City in 18 previous top-flight encounters (D2 L16), the most times a manager has faced an opponent in the division without a win.

Manchester City have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning seven of the last 10 head-to-heads. Pep Guardiola’s side have lost only once in their last eight visits to St James’ Park, and in three of the last four meetings at Newcastle, both teams have scored.

City arrive in excellent form, having won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions. They have been prolific in attack, scoring at least three goals in each of their last four games, though they have kept just one clean sheet during that run.

After losing two of their first three Premier League matches this season (W1), City have bounced back impressively, winning 11 of their last 14 games in all competitions, including six of their last eight in the league. Their most recent result was a statement 3-0 home win over reigning champions Liverpool, a match that marked Guardiola’s 1,000th game as a manager. That victory lifted City to second place in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal, who face Tottenham on Sunday.

While City boast the best home record in the Premier League this season with 15 points from six matches (W5 L1), their away form has been less convincing, with just two wins from five league games on the road (D1 L2), most recently losing 1-0 at Aston Villa at the end of October.

Last season, City drew 1-1 at Newcastle, but they will be confident heading into this weekend, having won 12 Premier League away games against the Magpies—their joint-most away victories against any opponent in the division (also 12 against Everton).
