Neymar to have left-knee arthroscopy, six-month Santos extension under consideration

According to L'Équipe, Neymar travelled on Sunday to Belo Horizonte for arthroscopy on his left knee, to be performed by the Seleção doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.

Lasmar, who twice operated on Neymar’s metatarsals, will address a meniscus problem that troubled him late in the season. Despite the pain, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward hit five goals and one assist across the final four Brasileirão matches as Santos finished 12th and secured survival.

After the procedure, Neymar will rest and is not expected to return before early February.

His contract with his boyhood club expires on 31 December, and the Brazil international, 128 caps and 79 goals, is expected to extend by six months.

The club are optimistic and he wants to remain in a supportive environment to maximise his chances of a call from Carlo Ancelotti and a fourth World Cup. At a show by singer Thiaginho, he told fans he would do everything to bring the trophy back to Brazil, saying they could hold him to it in July and appealing to Ancelotti for help.
