On-loan senior Man United man sets audacious new target of playing first-team role under Ruben Amorim next season

Andre Onana has set his sights on returning to Manchester United at the end of the season and reclaiming the No.1 spot, according to the iPaper.

It’s certainly an ambitious target to say the least, as the Cameroonian had fallen hugely out of favour prior to his September departure.

When 2025/2026 got underway, it was instantly clear that Ruben Amorim had promoted Altay Bayindir to his first-choice between the sticks following a lacklustre end to the 2024/2025 season from Onana.

Then, in United’s second-round Carabao Cup clash away to Grimsby Town, Onana was granted his first start, and proceeded to add yet another turbulent display to his catalogue when conceding two first-half goals to the League Two opposition, followed by 12 penalties in the shootout.

That abysmal night at Blundell Park would spell the end of his Red Devils career, albeit initially only on a temporary basis, as he joined Trabzonspor on loan for the term just 15 days later.

By the time Onana jetted off to Turkey, United had already secured his replacement in the form of Senne Lammens.

The 23-year-old signed from Royal Antwerp in an £18 million deal on deadline day, yet didn’t make his debut until October 4 in a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

He has since retained his place in the subsequent four matches, and United have yet to taste defeat with Lammens between the sticks.

Bayindir has also had to accept a reduced role amid Lammens’ stellar form. Presumably, fans won’t see him in action until the FA Cup.

Alas, it’s safe to say Onana has no future at Old Trafford . Pete Hall’s report adds that if it’s made clear he is no longer wanted by Amorim, he will look to secure a move to another Premier League side.

Trabzonspor do want to make his transfer permanent, but there is no buy option or clause included in the terms.
