RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner appears set to decline January transfer and ride out his Bundesliga contract
Kicker reports that – despite a plethora of reports linking him with a move to America’s MLS – RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner may be preparing to simply ride out his current Bundesliga contract. The 29-year-old evidently sees no reason to forfeit six months worth of his current salary in order to make a move in January. Leipzig themselves may also find little reason to collect a pittance on the current €5m-valued attacker.
Werner has technically been reintegrated into Ole Werner’s team, but still only made three matchday squads through 14 rounds of play this season. During Leipzig’s recent 3-1 away defeat to Union Berlin last Friday night, Werner made his second appearance as an RB sub this season. On both matchday five and 14, Werner entered as a totally irrelevant sub after the 90th-minute.
Should Leipzig suffer a raft of injuries, Werner could conceivably play something of a role for the German Red Bulls this year. Leipzig – who are not participating in European competition this season – do remain alive in the DFB Pokal and are seeking to fight their way past Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals and potentially capture their third league cup. Leipzig are also currently on course for Champions League football next season in second place in the table.
