Robbie Fowler has compared Manchester United star Benjamin Sesko to an academy player as he continues to adapt to the Premier League. The Slovenian striker was signed for £74m in the summer from German side RB Leipzig.

He has had a slow start to life at Old Trafford though, scoring just twice so far in 12 appearances. And he is now set to be restricted to the sidelines until at least mid-December having picked up an injury before the international break.

For much of the summer, both Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres were linked with moves to both United and Arsenal , with the latter ultimately making the move to North London. Therefore, the two are often compared as both get up to speed in the English top-flight.

And Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler speaking to Adventure Gamers , was asked which striker looks better suited to the league, with Fowler pulling no punches in his Sesko assessment. “For me I think the obvious one is Gyokeres," he explained.

“He's probably better suited to the Premier League and he understands what is needed in terms of speed, energy and commitment. Whereas Sesko has probably struggled a little at times. He looks a little bit, I hope this doesn't come across wrong, but he looks a bit of an academy player.

“I have no doubt he's a good player. No one's questioning his ability, but at the minute I think out of those two it's Gyokeres by far who looks better equipped.”

Alan Shearer has also been particularly critical of Sesko, having claimed that United would have been expecting more given the money they paid for the forward.

Speaking to Betfair , he said: “One player that must do better for United is Benjamin Sesko. They paid 70 odd million for him.

“That was a lot of money, I know it’s the market but it was too much. He’s had a tough start and I don’t expect huge things from him to be honest.

“I think he’s a good player but I’m not sure he’s any more than that. He should have scored a couple more goals than he has so far. It’s been a tough start for him, especially considering the money United paid.”

Sesko now faces an extended period on the sidelines despite avoiding serious injury. He will miss this weekend’s clash with Everton at Old Trafford, while he will also be out of upcoming clashes against Crystal Palace , West Ham , Wolves and Bournemouth .

Man United head into this weekend’s game in seventh in the Premier League following a five-game unbeaten run. Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi are among the options that Amorim could select to lead the line in Sesko’s absence.
