Peter Crouch recounted how Roy Keane's intervention forced him to sell his Aston Martin - despite the Irishman not saying a single word to him. The former footballer became a supercar owner in 2005 after earning a £7million move to then-reigning Champions League winners Liverpool from Southampton.

In the same year Crouch made his England debut, the ex-striker decided to splurge on a luxury car to celebrate his new success in his footballing career at just 24 years of age.

However, his association with the Aston Martin vehicle was extremely short-lived as he sold the car just days after buying it, after a brief interaction with Manchester United legend Keane at a set of traffic lights.

Discussing the moment on his The Therapy Crouch podcast, which he co-hosts with wife Abbey Clancy, the pundit admitted a solitary look from Keane was enough for him to part ways with the car.

He said: "I bought an Aston Martin when I was kind of playing for Liverpool. I got in the England squad and I thought, yeah I have made it, I’ll get an Aston Martin, I deserve it. But I knew I looked like a t**t in it. And then I was driving around, I remember seeing Roy Keane at the lights.

"He just gave me a look of like what a d*******. I had my arm out, bins on, listening to some garage. And he just looked at me like a piece of s**t. And I literally, with that look sold the car that week.

"It was one of the nicest cars like ever, but I had just started well as it was like a little bit too much." To add insult to injury, Crouch revealed that despite owning the car for just days, he lost a whopping £25,000 on the sale.

"I've never felt smaller in all my life," he said in 2020 when talking about Keane's reaction. "He didn't even give me a wave or a nod of appreciation or anything, he just drove off. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, 'No, you've lost the plot here'. I sold the car that week and must have taken a £25k hit on it."

Clancy, who has been married to Crouch since 2011 and shares four children with him, reacted to the story as she added: "You’re not a flashy person who is really obsessed with cars. My favourite car Pete bought me, a vintage 1986 Mercedes convertible for my 30th birthday. That’s when you loved me."

It may have been a whirlwind summer for Crouch 20 years ago, but he had a less-than-stellar start to life at Anfield. It took the ex-striker 19 games to score his first goal for the Reds, but he did go on to become a fan favourite in Merseyside as he racked up 42 goals and 23 assists in 135 games for the club.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
