Manchester United wasted the chance to move back into the Premier League top four after being beaten by ten-man Everton at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

The drama started within the opening 15 minutes as Everton star Idrissa Gueye was sent off after clashing with teammate Michael Keane. Despite the disadvantage, the Toffees rallied and even took a surprise lead thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's eye-catching strike.

United pushed for an equaliser but found England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as an unbeatable barrier. And his performance was crucial to the Toffees holding on to secure what was an unlikely victory.

Midfielder Gueye has been one of Everton's most consistent players over recent seasons but a sheer moment of madness saw him dismissed at Old Trafford. After clashing with his own teammate Michael Keane , Gueye appeared to raise his hand to the defender's face.

The pair were embroiled in an angry argument, with Gueye striking out and earning himself a red card. It's one thing getting dismissed after a bad tackle or becoming frustrated with the opposition, but it's another earning an early bath for a fight with your own teammate.

He now faces an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct. There's no doubt that boss David Moyes will be absolutely furious - and rightly so.

With nearly 80 minutes to come against ten men, the Red Devils had a real opportunity ahead of them. Not that you'd have known it throughout the majority of the first period as Everton claimed a shock lead.

It was a stunning goal from midfielder Dewsbury-Hall that broke the deadlock. He picked the ball up outside of the penalty area, shrugged off a couple of challenges and curled a brilliant effort past the despairing dive of Senne Lammens.

It was an eye-catching display from the midfielder, who now seems to be at home in the Premier League.

After being involved in the incident that saw Gueye dismissed, former United defender Keane was then at the heart of one of the flashpoints of the second period as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.

Bryan Mbeumo , who was the Red Devils' most threatening player throughout the game, appeared to have a great chance as the ball dropped to him in the penalty area. As he stretched to fire home, he appeared to be caught by Keane, who also threw a boot out.

It appeared as though United had a great shout for a spot-kick but replays showed that Keane got a slight touch on the ball before catching Mbeumo.

After a memorable international fortnight where he extended his record-breaking run without conceding a goal for England, Everton stopper Jordan Pickford was at it again. The stopper produced a host of impressive stops to keep United at bay.

The most spectacular save of Pickford's showreel at Old Trafford came as he denied Bruno Fernandes from range. He then made a couple of brilliant stops to tip away goal-bound headers from Joshua Zirkzee.

It was an impressive showing from the former Sunderland man and was more than worthy of seeing him end the evening on the winning side.

Handed his first Premier League start of the season in the absences of both Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko , Monday's clash against Everton was a real chance for Joshua Zirkzee to get his United career back on track.

But the Dutch forward really struggled to make an impression. He was not enough of a threat going forwards, allowing for one brilliant header, while he was also extremely sloppy on the ball.

He eventually ended up playing the entire game, but that was more out of necessity than choice. As it stands, Zirkzee looks far from the solution for the Red Devils in attack
